TEWAARATON FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF 2024 TEWAARATON HAUDENOSAUNEE SCHOLARSHIPS, PRESENTED BY THE PLL

Updated: Mar 3

WASHINGTON – The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced the recipients of the 18th annual Tewaaraton Haudenosaunee Scholarships, presented by the PLL. Awarded to male and female students each year, the scholarship honors high school students of Haudenosaunee heritage who exemplify high character, leadership, and academics both on and off the lacrosse field. Applicants are asked to submit an essay describing what the sport of lacrosse means to them as Native American student-athletes and members of their community, as well as two letters of recommendation and a high school transcript.

2024 PLL Tewaaraton Scholarship recipient Avery Doran is from Wilton, Connecticut. She is a member of the Bear Clan of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.

Avery is graduating from Hotchkiss School where she was an outstanding multi-sport student athlete and 2024 captain of her lacrosse team. She will matriculate to Brown University this fall and will be playing lacrosse. Avery has also been selected to represent the Haudenosaunee Nationals U20 Women's team that will compete in the 2024 U20 World Lacrosse Championships in Hong Kong.

“I believe that Tewaaraton is a game of “Good Medicine”. It is a game of peace that unifies us as people, players, and Nations. I think a perfect example of this belief is when Team Ireland gave up their spot in the World Games to our Haudenosaunee men’s team a few years ago. They did this because they felt so strongly about the history of Tewaaraton and they wanted to honor the original intention of the game which was to bring people together. The actions of Team Ireland were felt and heard around the world and so many people and countries came together to support us. It is because of Team Ireland and the unity of our supporters that changed the mindset of the World Games Association and allowed us to participate. This is why I believe that lacrosse can UNIFY and that it can change the world.” Excerpt from Avery’s Application Essay

2024 PLL Tewaaraton Scholarship recipient Brett Bucktooth, Jr. is from Nedrow, New York.  He is a member of the Wolf Clan of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation.

Brett is a graduate of LaFayette Central High School where he played lacrosse three years and was a two time Captain. Brett attended college-preparatory school at Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts this past year. Brett will attend Syracuse University this fall where he will play lacrosse.

“Through my experiences, I have developed a deep understanding that the Creator's game has been a guide for me to become the best version of myself. It’s not that I want to be successful and achieve my own goals and dreams but to motivate and inspire others to do the same by teaching them the knowledge I’ve captured through the game of lacrosse. The beauty of the game of lacrosse is the continuation of wisdom and teachings that are passed down through generations and generations of our Ancestors as Onkwehonwe people.”  Excerpt from Brett’s Application Essay
